Ever since Rich started doing triathlons several years ago his goal has been to stay competitive. As a father, husband and committed endurance athlete he’s come to realize that the older you get and the less time you have to train, the harder it is to accomplish your goals. You need to make every workout count. No wasted miles. One thing you hope comes with age is experience and intelligence. Knowing what works and how to train smart.
Another thing he’s come to accept is that, at 45, his body doesn’t bounce back from long, hard workouts like it used to. A key component Rich has added to his training program over the last few years has been supplementation. With so many choices when it comes to supplements, Rich says “I really had to sift through propaganda and focus on the research. That’s why I chose NOW Sports. They are a company you can believe in and trust.”
Congratulations to Rich who finished IRONMAN Canada, July 26, 2015, in 11:32:00! Here’s his take on the race: The course is comprised of 6,000’ of climbing on the bike and 1,000’ of elevation gain on the run. Temps were hovering around 50 degrees as we entered in Alta Lake for the swim start. After a rough swim I got out of the water in 64th place in the 50-54 age group. The first 45 miles on the bike was in a constant downpour. A bone chilling start to the day. After a long hard rain soaked 112 miles on the bike I entered T2 in 21st place. I was tired but at the same time energized to start the two loop run course. By the time I crossed the finish line I was in 12th place. 1,948 people had signed up for the race; 1,504 finished. 23% either didn’t start or didn’t finish. It was a tough, long hard day. He credits these specific NOW products for supporting his training: Electro Pro, L-Glutamine, GPLC, Ribose, Fish Oils and D-Flame.
Why I’m a NOW Ambassador
I break down my nutrition into two categories – active and recovery. One key ingredient that I feel has had an impact on my training is NOW® D-Ribose. I add five grams of it to my bottles before each ride and on a run of five miles or more. Not only does it keep my energy levels up without having a stimulant effect, but it protects and helps my heart recover from the high intensity training I put my body through on a daily basis.
My one-two punch for recovery is NOW Glutamine and NOW ZMA. I take at least eight grams at night and will take up to 15 grams after a hard workout or race. You can’t make any progress in your training if you don’t allow your body to recover and adapt to the increased work load.
*NOW sponsors and provides financial support for Rich Hurd for his triathlon competitions.
