Jon Guy Owens is a 39-year-old fitness enthusiast and the director of the Hollins Outdoor Program (HOP) at Hollins University, a female-only university in Roanoke, Virginia. As director he facilitates weekly trips for students that include rock climbing, whitewater canoeing and kayaking, backpacking, and caving. He also teaches adventure recreation and outdoor leadership courses in the physical education department. Jon founded the Hollins University Downriver Racing Team, a competitive team that competes 2 to 3 times a year in the American Canoe Association’s collegiate series. The team recently placed 1st in Virginia State Championships and 3rd at Nationals. This is more impressive when you consider that the Hollins University Downriver Racing Team is an all-women’s team competing against co-ed teams.

Jon also developed a conditioning program for the students that includes strength training, Crossfit-styled workouts, and nutritional education. The workouts for the students on the downriver racing team became so popular that other faculty and students began showing up for the workouts and Jon ran out of space and equipment. This led to the development of a new class called “Conditioning for Outdoor Fitness” which is now offered every fall semester.

Why I’m a NOW Ambassador

Like so many of us, I’ve become less active as I’ve aged, and not too long ago I realized that I had become overweight. When my son was born in November 2009 my time outdoors was greatly curtailed and my fitness level dropped significantly as a result. The following May I shattered my collarbone horseback riding, leading to surgery and 3 ½ months of restricted activity. I was in the worst shape of my life and I knew then that I had to make major changes to the way I was living. I started doing Crossfit and, for the first time, really began educating myself about nutrition.

This is when I realized that I needed to incorporate a good supplementation program into my improved health regimen. I had a major shift in my mindset concerning athletic nutrition as I began to increase the intensity and duration of my workouts. Eventually, I noticed that my chiropractor sold NOW supplements and I was introduced to NOW. After further research into nutrition and NOW products in particular I began supplementing. Whey Protein Isolate is my go-to supplement; it was an integral part of the total process that led to my personal weight loss of 28 pounds and a drop from 23% to 14% body fat.
